You press the power button and… nothing. No lights, no whirring, a black screen staring back. It's a horrible little moment — but before you imagine the worst (and the bill that comes with it), take heart: a laptop that "won't turn on" is very often a laptop that just needs the right nudge. Let's work through it calmly, from the simplest fix to the most stubborn.
Most "dead" laptops aren't broken at all — it's a flat battery, a dud charger, or a tiny bit of stuck power that a special restart clears. Work through the steps below in order before assuming the worst.
Step 1: Is it really getting power?
It sounds obvious, but this catches a great many people, so humour us:
- Plug the charger in and look for a small light on the laptop or charger. No light? The power isn't reaching it.
- Check the cable is firmly pushed in at both ends — the wall and the laptop.
- Try a different wall socket, and switch the socket on at the wall.
- Look along the cable for any fraying or kinks, especially near the plug.
So what? A surprising number of "dead" laptops are simply a charger that's failed or a socket that's switched off.
Step 2: The power-drain restart (the magic trick)
This is the single most effective fix, and it's completely safe. It clears a stuck electrical state that can leave a laptop unresponsive.
- Unplug the charger.
- Press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds. (Yes, really — count them out.)
- Let go, plug the charger back in, wait a moment, then press the power button once as normal.
If your laptop has a removable battery (many older ones do), take it out, then hold the power button for 30 seconds with no battery and no charger. Pop the battery back in and try again. This clears the "stuck power" more thoroughly than anything else.
So what? This one step revives a great many laptops that seemed completely dead.
Step 3: Is it on — but the screen is blank?
Sometimes the computer is running and only the screen is dark. Look and listen for clues:
| What you notice | What it points to |
|---|---|
| Lights on, fan whirring, but black screen | The computer's running — likely a screen or display fault |
| A faint image if you shine a torch on the screen | The backlight has failed, not the whole screen |
| No lights, no sound at all | A power problem — go back to Steps 1 and 2 |
If you suspect the screen, try turning the brightness up (the keys with little sun symbols), and if you can, plug the laptop into a TV or monitor with an HDMI cable. If a picture appears on the TV, the computer is fine and it's the laptop's own screen that needs attention.
So what? "Won't turn on" and "screen won't light up" are two different problems with very different fixes.
When it's time to call in help
If you've worked through all of the above and it's still lifeless, it may be a deeper fault — a failed charging port, battery or internal part. That's not a job for the kitchen table, and that's perfectly alright.
On an older laptop, a repair can cost more than the machine is worth. It's always worth weighing the quote against a tested refurbished replacement — often the more sensible spend. Not sure? Ask IT Man and we'll give you an honest opinion, free.
What should I do?
- Check the charger light, the cable, and the wall socket.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds (battery out if removable), then try again.
- Look for signs it's running with a dark screen — shine a torch, try a TV via HDMI.
- If still dead, get an honest repair-or-replace opinion before spending.
Nine times out of ten, the fix is in the first two steps — and you'll feel rather pleased with yourself for sorting it.
