Phone Battery Draining Fast? How to Fix It

You charged it overnight, and by lunchtime it's gasping at 20%. A phone that won't hold its charge is a daily worry — especially if you rely on it for calls, maps or staying in touch when you're out. The reassuring news is that battery drain usually comes down to a handful of settings and habits, and you can tame most of it this afternoon without spending a penny.

First, the honest truth about batteries

All phone batteries weaken slowly with age — it's normal, not a fault. After about two to three years, a battery holds noticeably less than when new. But before blaming age, it's well worth checking the settings below, because they're usually the bigger drain.

1. Turn down the screen — your number-one battery drain

The screen uses more power than anything else on the phone, and most are set far brighter than they need to be.

  • Lower the brightness — swipe to find the brightness slider and ease it down to a comfortable level.
  • Turn on auto-brightness so it adjusts itself to the light around you.
  • Shorten the screen timeout (how long before it sleeps): Settings → Display. Thirty seconds is plenty.

So what? Dimming the screen and letting it sleep sooner is the single biggest saving you can make.

2. Switch on Battery Saver / Low Power Mode

Every phone has a built-in mode that quietly stretches the battery by trimming background activity. There's no harm in leaving it on all the time.

Phone Where to find it
iPhone Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode
Android Settings → Battery → Battery Saver (or Power saving)
Golden Tip

Your phone can tell you exactly what's draining it. Go to Settings → Battery and look at the list — it shows which apps use the most power. If something you barely use is near the top, that's your culprit; restrict it or remove it.

So what? The phone hands you the evidence. A minute in Battery settings often reveals one greedy app behind it all.

3. Rein in the background hogs

A few common culprits drain power even when you're not using them:

  • Location/GPS — handy for maps, but many apps use it constantly when they needn't. Limit it: Settings → Privacy/Location.
  • Background app refresh — apps quietly updating themselves. Turn it off for ones that don't need it.
  • Push email set to "fetch constantly" — switch to checking every 15–30 minutes.
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi left on when out and about, endlessly searching for connections.

So what? It's the things working in the background — unseen — that drain a battery fastest.

4. Look after the battery's health

A few gentle habits help the battery last longer, both through the day and over the years:

  • Avoid letting it run flat to 0% repeatedly, and avoid leaving it at 100% all day — somewhere in the middle is kindest.
  • Keep it out of extreme heat (a hot car, direct sun) — heat is a battery's worst enemy.
  • Use a good-quality charger; very cheap unbranded ones can charge poorly.

So what? Small, kind habits noticeably slow a battery's decline.

When the battery is simply worn out

If you've tried all of the above and it still won't see out the day, the battery may genuinely be tired. On an iPhone you can check: Settings → Battery → Battery Health — below about 80% "maximum capacity", it's past its best.

Replace the battery, or the phone?

Sometimes a fresh battery fitted by a repair shop revives a phone beautifully and cheaply. Other times — on an older handset — a tested refurbished phone is the better value. Tell us your phone and its age and we'll give you a straight steer, free of charge, at Ask IT Man.

What should I do?

  1. Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
  2. Turn on Battery Saver / Low Power Mode.
  3. Check Settings → Battery to find the greediest app.
  4. Trim location, background refresh and constant email.
  5. If still poor, check the battery's health and weigh a new battery against a refurbished phone.

A little attention to settings, and most phones happily make it to bedtime again. Save the new-phone decision for when the battery has truly earned its retirement.
