What Do Refurbished Grades Actually Mean?
Grade A. Grade B. Grade C. "Excellent condition." "Good condition." "Fully functional." The refurbished tech industry uses a lot of labels, and they don't all mean the same thing from every seller.
This guide explains how grading works, what each grade means at ithaven, and how to choose the right grade for your needs — so you're never surprised when your device arrives.
The Three Grades — Defined Clearly
Grade A — Like New
A Grade A device has been refurbished to the highest standard. Cosmetically, it looks essentially new — or very close to it.
What you can expect:
- No visible scratches on the screen
- No dents or deep marks on the chassis
- Minor, microscopic signs of handling may be present (invisible at arm's length)
- Clean keyboard with no worn keycaps
- All ports, buttons, and hinges functioning perfectly
- Fresh battery (or tested at 80%+ original capacity)
Grade A is ideal if the device is a gift, if presentation matters to you, or if you simply want the closest thing to a new device at a lower price.
Grade B — Very Good
Grade B is the most popular grade for practical buyers — and for good reason. The device performs identically to Grade A, but shows light cosmetic signs of previous use.
What you can expect:
- Light scratches on the lid or base (not the screen)
- Possibly some minor keyboard wear
- Small scuffs on corners or edges
- No structural damage, no deep dents
- Screen in excellent condition
- All functionality 100%
When you're using a laptop with the lid closed on a desk, you'll never see the light marks on the lid. Grade B offers outstanding value — typically 10-20% cheaper than Grade A for what is, functionally, the same machine.
Grade C — Good
Grade C devices are clearly used — the cosmetic wear is noticeable. But they're fully functional, professionally tested, and everything works as it should.
What you can expect:
- Visible scratches on lid, base, or palmrest
- Possible small dent or deeper scuff
- Worn keycaps (letters still legible)
- Screen without cracks — but possibly with very light marks at edges
- All hardware working correctly
Grade C is ideal for:
- Students who want maximum spec for their budget
- Businesses equipping multiple desks
- Anyone who'll add a skin or sleeve anyway
- Buyers who simply don't care about aesthetics

What Every Grade Includes
Regardless of cosmetic grade, every device sold by ithaven goes through the same technical process:
- Full hardware test — CPU, RAM, storage, display, ports, keyboard, trackpad, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, speakers
- Data wipe — certified secure data erasure (no previous user data)
- OS reinstall — fresh Windows 11 or Windows 10 installation
- Battery assessment — tested and reported at original capacity percentage
- Firmware updates — BIOS and drivers updated
The grade only tells you about the outside. Inside, every device is in full working order.
What About Battery Health?
Battery is one of the most common questions we get — and rightly so. Here's how we handle it:
- All batteries are tested with professional diagnostic software
- Minimum threshold: 80% of original capacity
- Better batteries are graded higher where possible
- Battery health is listed individually on every product page
A battery at 85% capacity will give you roughly 85% of the original battery life figure for that model. In practice, most users find this perfectly sufficient for daily use.
How Do Other Sellers Grade?
Unfortunately, grading standards vary widely across the refurbished market. Some sellers use Grade A for devices with visible screen marks. Others call heavily worn devices "Grade B" that most reputable sellers would mark as Grade C.
This is why buying from a specialist refurbisher matters more than the grade label itself. At ithaven:
- Our Grade A means genuinely near-pristine
- We photograph actual devices, not stock images
- Our grading criteria are consistent across every product
Which Grade Should You Choose?
| Your Situation | Recommended Grade |
|---|---|
| Buying as a gift | Grade A |
| For personal daily use, want it to look great | Grade A or B |
| For work — function over form | Grade B (best value) |
| For a student, maximum spec for budget | Grade B or C |
| For a business buying multiple units | Grade B or C |
| You'll put a skin/case on it anyway | Grade C — save more |
The vast majority of our customers choose Grade B. You get a device that looks good and performs perfectly — at the best possible price.
