Windows 11 Quick Optimisation Tips

Make Windows 11 Calmer and Quicker — in Ten Minutes

A fresh Windows 11 laptop is perfectly good out of the box, but a few small changes make it tidier, faster and less fussy — especially if you'd rather it didn't keep interrupting you. None of this is risky, and you can do it all yourself in about ten minutes.

1. Quieten the Notifications

Those little messages that pop up in the corner can be distracting. To calm them down, go to Settings → System → Notifications and turn off the ones you don't need. You can switch them off altogether if you prefer peace and quiet.

2. Stop Programmes Launching at Start-up

The fewer programmes that leap up when you switch on, the quicker the laptop is ready. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click Start-up apps, and Disable anything you don't need first thing. (This doesn't delete anything.)

3. Turn On Storage Sense

This handy feature tidies away junk files by itself, so the laptop never gets clogged. Go to Settings → System → Storage and switch on Storage Sense. Set and forget.

In plain English

Storage Sense is like having a tidy person quietly empty the wastepaper basket each week, so clutter never builds up in the first place.

4. Make Sure You're Protected — For Free

You don't need to pay for antivirus. Windows 11 includes excellent protection already:

What It Does Free Tool
Built-in antivirus — already on and free Windows Security — press the Windows key, type "Windows Security", and check it shows green ticks
An occasional second opinion Malwarebytes Freemalwarebytes.com

If a website ever nags you to buy "PC cleaning" or "speed-up" software, ignore it. Windows already has everything you need, free of charge.

5. Keep It Up to Date

Updates bring both security and speed improvements. Go to Settings → Windows Update and click Check for updates every couple of weeks. Do it when you don't need the laptop for half an hour.

Like a hand setting it up just so?

Ask our IT Man — free and patient. Tell us what bothers you most about your laptop (too many pop-ups? feels slow?) and we'll talk you through the settings, one calm step at a time.

In a Nutshell

A few gentle changes make Windows 11 quieter and quicker: trim the notifications, stop programmes launching at start-up, switch on Storage Sense, and let Windows Security keep you safe for free. Ten minutes now saves a great deal of fuss later — and there's nothing here you can break.
